Custom homes · Farmington Valley, Connecticut

Homes built quiet, built well, built to last centuries.

High-performance, net-zero-capable homes for people who care how a house is made — not just how it looks.

Vision

We build homes meant to stand for centuries and largely take care of themselves — comfortable in any season, steady through any storm, and far less dependent on the world outside their walls.

That independence is engineered, not decorative. A continuous, airtight, deeply insulated shell holds its temperature with very little input. All-electric systems, on-site power, and storage keep the home running on its own when they need to. Air is filtered and renewed without opening a window. The home is quieter, healthier, and more durable as a direct result of how it is built — and it is made to pass to the next generation in better condition than most houses reach in a decade.

How it endures

What you feel, and what's behind it.

Stillness

Rooms that stay quiet and hold their temperature, hour after hour.

A continuous insulated concrete (ICF) envelope with almost no air leakage — mass and tightness working together.

Clean air

Fresh, filtered air in every room, every day, without opening a window.

Balanced HRV/ERV ventilation with heat recovery — comfort without the energy penalty.

Independence

Comfort that holds through a storm and an outage.

All-electric heat pumps, on-site solar, and battery backup — net-zero-capable, EV-ready, grid-optional. How we reach net zero →

Permanence

A home built to outlast generations of the family who live in it.

Durable assemblies and careful detailing, chosen so the structure stays sound and stays beautiful far longer than convention asks of it.

The science, measured

We don't ask you to take quality on faith.

Every home is modeled before the first shovel and tested after the last. Performance isn't a promise on a brochure — it's a number we hand you.

≤0.6
Air changes per hour at 50 Pa
A shell this tight means the air you breathe arrives filtered and controlled — not through gaps, doors, and windows. Far less dust, pollen, and outdoor pollution; no drafts; nothing for pests to slip through.
Net Zero
Modeled annual energy balance
Designed so on-site solar and storage can meet the home's own demand across the year — quietly independent of the grid when it counts.

Independently tested
Results are confirmed by a third party, not self-reported — the same rigor behind the building standards we design to.

The first home

A New England house, quietly engineered.

Our inaugural build is a roughly 3,100-square-foot home in the Farmington Valley — classic in form, exacting underneath. It is the proof of the model, and the first of a series.

Where we build

The Farmington Valley.

We build on select sites in the towns we know best — stone, trees, and hills that ask for homes made to belong there.

Who we are

Alta Terra is a small Connecticut firm with an unfashionable belief: that the best thing a builder can give a client is a house they never have to think about. We do the homework — the modeling, the testing, the detailing — so the home simply works, for a very long time.
